Looking for the perfect dark red nail polish and striking out every time. Every bottle I grab either turns out too bright, leans pink or orange, or goes so dark it basically looks black once it’s on.
I want that moody vampy red for sweater weather. Shimmer or glitter mixed in would be a bonus. What are your go-to picks?
Try OPI’s Malaga Wine. It’s a deep wine red that leans slightly plum in lower light, so it dodges that too-bright cherry problem you mentioned, but it never crosses into black territory the way a lot of the darker reds do. In sunlight you actually see the red come through.
Two coats get you full opacity with a glossy finish, and it wears really well without chipping for a couple of weeks if you use a decent top coat. No shimmer or glitter in this one, but the depth of the color kind of does that work on its own, especially over shorter nails.
If you want something with a little sparkle mixed in on top, a single coat of a fine burgundy shimmer over this would layer beautifully without muddying the base.

The ‘looks black once it’s on’ problem is real, and half the time it comes down to coat count. A lot of vampy reds look great at two thin coats and then go full goth at three. Before you toss anything, try it thinner. Some of my favorites only work because I stopped trying to get them opaque in one go.
For actual picks, OPI Malaga Wine is my sweater weather default. Proper blackened red that still reads as red in daylight and doesn’t pull pink or orange.
Essie Bordeaux runs a little warmer and more wine-y if you want it slightly brownish. If you like the OPI formula, Got the Blues for Red is a cool-toned dark red that stays red even in bad lighting.
Since you said shimmer would be a bonus, Zoya Blaze has a deep red base with a fine shimmer that catches light without turning into tacky glitter. OPI Black Cherry Chutney has shimmer too, but it’s darker, so keep it at two coats or it does the exact black thing you’re complaining about. ILNP has some holo reds if you want more flash, but they lean brighter.

Bordeaux is also kind of jelly-ish, so my nail line shows through at two thin coats. Malaga Wine covers more evenly and still reads as red.
Store testers for vampy shades are always gunked up or dried out, and nobody’s letting you return an opened bottle because it pulled plum on you. So you end up buying it and hoping, which is how you get a drawer full of almost-right reds.
I agree that undertone matters less at this depth than people think. Once a red goes dark enough, the cool/warm difference gets flattened out. Finish and how many coats you put on decide whether it reads red or black. Swatching on a nail wheel is the testing that actually pays off.
