Looking for some advice on polish remover, please.
I’ve been using Cutex. No shade to the formula, but whoever decided a bottle that tiny should cost $6 needs to be stopped. Two manis and it’s gone. I’ve tried Sally Hansen but it’s still 20 minutes just to get one finger clean with it… at that point I might as well just soak in acetone.
Doesn’t really matter what brand you get when the bottle is 100% acetone; it’s all the same stuff in there.
I made the same switch a couple of years ago and never went back. Sally Beauty and most drugstores sell a 16-ounce bottle for a few dollars (roughly a tenth of what Cutex costs per ounce), and it takes a dark cream off in one or two passes without any scrubbing. The Sally Hansen stuff feels like it’s fighting you because the gentler formulas use ethyl acetate and similar solvents, which don’t dissolve nitrocellulose anywhere near as fast.
It’s acetone-free but a lot faster than the usual gentle drugstore removers, and the the bottle lasts longer than Cutex did. It handles regular creams and shimmers fine, and my nails and skin don’t end up feeling stripped. I soak a small cotton pad, press it on the nail for about 15 seconds, then wipe toward the tip.
Scrubbing over and over with a half-dry pad just burns through remover and cotton. For glitter or several layers, I use remover clips and let the pads sit for a couple of minutes. The cost per manicure has been reasonable for me, and I’d take that over spending 20 minutes on one finger with a remover that technically works but clearly resents being asked.
It’s acetone-based, so it works fast, and the glycerin keeps it from feeling as harsh as plain acetone. My cuticles don’t get that white chalky look afterward either. It handles dark colors well and takes them off without smearing pigment all over my fingers.
So this is somewhere in the middle. The pump top controls how much remover ends up on the pad though, so I’m not dumping out way more than I need. I buy the 32-ounce refill when Zoya runs a sale and keep topping up the pump bottle, which brings the cost down a lot.
The scent is pretty strong and perfumed. If fragrance bothers you, this might not be the one.
Both Cutex and Sally Hansen make a few different removers, and the labels look almost identical on the shelf. There’s an acetone-free nourishing or strengthening one, and then there’s a regular one with acetone in it. If the Sally Hansen you’ve been fighting with is one of the acetone-free bottles, that would explain your 20 minutes. Flip it over and check.
Yeah, I grabbed the strengthening one by accident once and spent forever scrubbing glitter off before I finally noticed it said acetone-free right on the front.
Same, the price per ounce with plain acetone sold me. I get the big Sally Beauty bottle and pour some into a pump bottle.
It does dry out my cuticles a lot, but cuticle oil afterward has been enough for me. With dark polish, pressing the pad on the nail for a few seconds first means less rubbing and less skin contact.
Last year I grabbed the Sally Hansen strengthening one by accident and spent a week thinking my polish had somehow gotten more durable. It hadn’t. The remover was acetone-free and I hadn’t looked closely.
The only difference I’ve found is a tiny line of text near the bottom of the label. Flipping the bottle over like you said is safer though.
Quartered cotton pads. Smart, with how fast I’ve been going through remover. And with Mineral Fusion I’ll do the full 15-second press and let it sit and soak in before wiping. Thanks for that.
Purple bottle. That’s the Zoya one, if you’re hunting the shelf for it. It’s what I always grab when I want something that works without a ton of effort.
