Okay, so I really need recommendations. Been after a clear strengthening polish that lasts, and everything I try flakes off the second I wash dishes or step into a warm shower. Frustrating, especially when the whole point is growing my natural nails out longer. Pottery class is part of the problem too (clay absolutely wrecks my tips). So between that and just normal life stuff, I need something tough enough to prevent the snaps and splits.
I’ve had the best luck with Nailtiques Formula 2 and Orly Nail Defense. Nailtiques is harder and works better when my nails are actively peeling. The Orly has a bit more flex, so it survives bumps without cracking off as fast.
With either one, I wipe the nail with alcohol first, then do two really thin coats and run the brush along the free edge to seal it. Adding a thin coat every couple of days holds up way better than waiting for the whole thing to chip off.
Don’t keep piling on a hard strengthener forever. If your nails start feeling stiff or snapping instead of bending, switch to a more flexible clear base coat for a while.
Pottery is brutal on nails, so I feel you. This is the one I really like. It goes on thicker than a normal strengthener, almost like a gel topcoat, and it actually holds up through hot water and scrubbing. It doesn’t peel off in sheets the way Sally Hansen Hard as Nails used to for me.
I do two coats to start, then just swipe another layer every couple of days to patch the tips before they get thin. The pink tint is subtle, but it makes your nails look healthier even bare-ish. My nails used to snap at the free edge constantly and now they can finally grow past my fingertips without splitting. Not the cheapest but one bottle lasts me ages because you’re doing thin layers.
A very hard strengthener can make already-dry nails more brittle. OPI Nail Envy Original is the clear one that lasts best on me. I do two thin coats and cap the free edge every time. Nailtiques Formula 2 is good if your nails are really soft and peeling, though I wouldn’t use it forever once they improve.
The flaking is usually a prep problem. If there’s any oil or hand cream on the nail before you paint, the strengthener sits on top like a sticker and lifts the first time it hits hot water. I wipe every nail with a bit of alcohol or acetone on a cotton pad right before the first coat, and that made more difference than switching brands ever did…
Good call on going from a hard strengthener to a flexible base coat. I did the opposite for way too long. Months of layering Nailtiques Formula 2, my nails felt rock solid, then they started snapping off in little pieces.
Switching to Orly once the peeling calms down makes sense. Wish I’d done that instead of doubling down on the strengthener.
The alcohol swipe and the acetone swipe do different things. Acetone strips oil, but it also pulls moisture out of the nail plate and roughs up the surface a bit. That’s fine for a one-time prep wipe, but it’ll dry your nails out if you’re doing it every couple of days before a fresh coat of strengthener.
Plain isopropyl (look for 70% or higher) lifts hand cream and skin oil just as well without drying the keratin… so I’d go with that for something you’re maintaining constantly. Agree this beats brand hopping though.
Snapping off in little pieces is exactly what I’m scared of. The Nailtiques thing worries me a bit too since I was about to grab a bottle for the pottery days. Good to hear the Orly plan isn’t off base though.
When your nails started breaking after all that Formula 2, how long did it take for them to recover once you stopped? Did you have to cut them right down, or could you just let them grow out?
